It is widely believed that Jesus Christ was executed on the “cross”, but Christians use it as a symbol of Christ and of their faith. Imagine if he was executed by beheading with the sword, will you be using the sword as a symbol of Christ and of your faith? Imagine further if Christ had come to the world a little later and had been executed by a firing squad, or by electric chair, or by gas chamber, or by lethal injection what would you be using as his symbol? By whatever means the hypocrites had executed Christ, no physical symbol is appropriate.

Friends, it is for the love of mankind that the Father had given up His Son as a conciliatory sacrifice for man’s sins, and it is for the same love that the Son had dutifully obeyed the Father. If there is a symbol you would want to be reminded of Christ, it is of this love, symbolized by the bread which are the teachings of Christ that you must eat and learn, and by the cup of wine that you must drink which is your blood that must be poured out as the sufferings that you must endure to accomplish your work of witnessing for Christ. As often as you eat this bread and drink this cup you keep proclaiming your faith until his return (1Cor 11:26).
